Wilson County is the fastest growing county Austin serves, and Lebanon is pulling away from Mount Juliet in size. Criminal cases and civil cases sit in two different Lebanon buildings, and the grand jury runs on a schedule unique to this county. A Wilson County criminal defense attorney has to calendar around that cycle.

Wilson County is in the 15th Judicial District with Jackson, Macon, Smith and Trousdale counties. The district has a dedicated Criminal Court judge created by statute, not a circuit judge wearing a criminal hat, and the clerk lists the court as Circuit Criminal Court. It handles all felony cases and all criminal jury trials.
Because it is a five-county district, the judges rotate. That is normal for a rural district and it is the thing that most affects timing. What is not normal is Wilson County's grand jury schedule, which the district's own local rules carve out separately from the other four counties.
| Court | What it handles |
|---|---|
| General Sessions, three divisions | Misdemeanors on a written waiver, preliminary hearings, traffic. One division handles family matters |
| Circuit Criminal Court | All felony cases and all criminal jury trials, before the district's Criminal Court judge |
| Circuit Civil Court | Domestic relations, personal injury, workers compensation. A different building |
Most cases start in General Sessions, and that court has a hard ceiling. Under § 40-1-109 it can enter final judgment only in a misdemeanor, and only where the defendant waives indictment, presentment, grand jury investigation and a jury trial in writing. A felony cannot be tried there at all. Section 40-3-101 allows a criminal charge to be answered only by presentment, indictment or impeachment, so at the General Sessions stage a felony gets a preliminary hearing and a bind-over rather than a trial.
Three things worth knowing. Not every case passes through General Sessions at all — a grand jury presentment or a direct indictment starts the case in the higher court, and someone arrested on an indictment has already skipped the stage this page describes. Waiving the preliminary hearing is not unilateral either: under § 40-10-114 the State can block a waiver by making a timely objection for good cause. And a felony can skip the grand jury by information under § 40-3-103, but only with the defendant's written waiver made in the presence of counsel, and only with the court's consent.
Confirm your setting with the clerk before you travel. Court locations and docket days change, and the addresses below are current as of the date on this page rather than guaranteed forever.
| Where | What happens there |
|---|---|
| 115 East High Street, Lebanon 37087 | Circuit Criminal Court, General Sessions I and II, and Juvenile Court |
| 134 South College Street, Lebanon 37087 | Circuit Civil and General Sessions III, family. Not where your criminal case is |

These programs are demanding rather than easy, and admission is never automatic. They are worth asking about early, because several of them turn on facts that get decided during plea negotiations rather than after.
| Program | What is published about it |
|---|---|
| 15th Judicial District Recovery Court | Circuit and Criminal level, serving all five counties in the district. Published criteria: adult felony or misdemeanor offenders who are non-violent, substance addicted and willing, with a sentence no less than 11/29 and no more than ten years. Runs eighteen to twenty-four months. Disqualifiers include violent offense convictions, conviction for the sale of a controlled substance, multiple out-of-jurisdiction sentences, excessive restitution owed, and refusal to cooperate |
| Veterans Treatment Court | None serving Wilson County. The state roster lists veterans courts in twelve districts and the 15th is not among them |
| DUI Court | None serving Wilson County. |
| Mental Health Court | None in Wilson County. The only mental health court in the 15th District is in Smith County |
Eligibility criteria come from the courts' own published materials and from the state's treatment court roster. Programs change their criteria, and not every program publishes them, so treat this as the starting point for a conversation rather than as a decision.
The jail is 105 East High Street. The criminal courthouse is 115 East High Street. Ten numbers apart on the same street. Meanwhile civil and family court are on South College, in a different building entirely. Clients go to the wrong one regularly.
The district's local rules select the grand jury on the first day of the court term in every county except this one. In Wilson County it is selected on the second Monday in March, May, July, September and November. That sets the floor on how soon a bound-over case can be indicted. It does not cap how long it might take, because nothing stops a case passing from one term to the next, but it is a date worth knowing when you are deciding whether to waive a preliminary hearing.
The local rules require discovery motions within ten days from the arraignment date, and provide that plea documents be signed before entering court on disposition dates, with continuances of those dates at the court's discretion. Short clocks reward getting counsel involved early.
Lebanon is the county seat at roughly 53,000 people. Mount Juliet is at roughly 45,000. In the 2020 census Mount Juliet was actually the larger of the two, and Lebanon has grown faster since, so the gap is widening rather than closing. Either way, court for both is in Lebanon.
The charge pages below go through the Tennessee statutes in detail, including the 2026 changes that took effect on July 1. This page is about where your case is heard. Those pages are about what you are facing.
Lebanon is the county seat and holds the criminal courts. Mount Juliet has a city court of its own, but it handles city citations rather than state charges.
Wilson and Smith counties share the 15th Judicial District, which means the same District Attorney's office, the same District Public Defender and the same Criminal Court judge. Jackson, Macon and Trousdale counties are in it too.
115 East High Street in Lebanon. That building carries Circuit Criminal Court, General Sessions I and II, and Juvenile Court. Civil and family matters are at 134 South College Street, which is a different building, and the jail is at 105 East High Street, which is a different address on the same street.
For a state criminal charge, no. Mount Juliet is in Wilson County and county court is in Lebanon, at 115 East High Street. Mount Juliet does run a city court of its own, but it handles city citations — traffic and ordinance matters written by Mount Juliet police. Anything that can put you in jail or on the record as a conviction for a state offense is heard in Lebanon. Mount Juliet was the larger of the two cities at the 2020 census and Lebanon has since pulled ahead, but neither fact changes where you appear.
The district's local rules give Wilson County its own schedule: the second Monday in March, May, July, September and November. Every other county in the 15th District selects its grand jury on the first day of the court term. That schedule sets the floor on how soon a bound-over case can be indicted, though nothing caps how long it may actually take.
Neither. The 15th Judicial District has a Recovery Court that serves all five of its counties, and Smith County has a mental health court, but the state roster shows no veterans treatment court and no DUI court for this district. That is worth knowing before anyone plans a resolution around a program that is not here.

The first conversation costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It is usually enough to tell you what the realistic outcomes are and what has to happen first.

Where a case starts in General Sessions, much of what can be done with it is decided there, before anything has been indicted.
Austin served, and Patriot Law was built around defending people who did.
Each county page covers the court structure, the specialty courts and the local rules of that county. Each city page covers which court actually has your case, how far away it is, and what that city's own court can and cannot do. The areas served page lays all of it out in one place. If your city is not listed, call anyway — these are the places Austin appears most often, not the limits of where he goes.
Every day you wait is a day the prosecution is working and you are not. Call Patriot Law and get a straight read on where you actually stand.
